one, the announcement boosts the chuck hagel nomination. it's saying i'm going there. i know i didn't make it to israel in my first four years of office, but i'm going. if you are reading into this nomination, don't. it rubber stamps john kerry as secretary of state. john kerry wants to make the israeli and little east process a big part of his agenda. obama's way of saying i'm taking that message and just nominated this guy and i am taking john kerry with me in spirit. for us in terms of policy, it probably has less to do with israel and the palestinians and more to do on our end with syria, egypt, iran and seeing what we can flush out in terms of three different theaters. there is a lot on. agenda and does a lot of things. >> my read on the rational behind obama going-over there, i read it more as a triumphant move. >> a victory lap? >> if you look how netanyahu expected the last few months to play out here in the united states and in israel, it went the opposite of what he was thinking. a year ago he was really missing no opportunity to sort of try to turn the heat

can chuck hagel mend fences in the republican party? >> is he technically a republican, but i think we should leave the guy alone, respect the president's decision, and see what committee do. >> leave the dude alone. >> amen. >> amen to that. i don't know. he has a lot on his plate. john brennan is now the strawman for the republican party. they may hold up his nomination. in the end, michael eric dyson, is this obstruction benefitting the republican party? >> not at all. the reality is that they hate who they hate because they hate the guy in charge, so they end up hating the people who are themselves. we've seen the enemy, and it's us, except they don't recognize that they're doing the country a great disservice, and by targeting, you know, hagel and brennan, and you might have legitimate opposition to them, but do it in a way that is above board, not across the board kind of filibustering and the people who are in the cabinet serve at the president's leisure and his pleasure, and we've now set a horrible precedent. >> we have to leav

senate republicans have successfully blocked a vote on chuck hagel. republicans have thrown out so many different reasons for this it's hard to know why they're opposing the man becoming secretary of defense. it's hard to keep up with all their arguments. it's because hagel hasn't accounted for every penny he's made and every single word of every single speech he's ever given. it's because of what he said about israel and iran, maybe, but it's also because of the white house's response to benghazi, perhaps, something obviously, but that was nothing to do with chuck hagel who wasn't in the government at that time. well, today republican threats to take the unprecedented step of blocking a presidential cabinet appointment came to fruition, if you will. democrats moved forward with a procedural vote to end debate and pave the way for a final up and down vote. then it failed. it failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. so -- and this just happened. where does hagel's nomination go from here and what are the republicans really up to here

everyone voting today knows that chuck hagel is going to be confirmed. in fact, there are a number of people who have made commitments that they will, in fact, vote for cloture when we return. so this is some kind of grandstanding that goes on. i'm confident he'll get the votes when we return, and he will take his place as secretary of state. but he is going to miss the nato conference next week, and it sends a signal to the rest of the world that maybe he doesn't have the full support of the american government, which is not a good place for our secretary of defense to be in. >> well, the jackals are in the streets tonight. thank you so much, senator claire mccaskill. and peter beinart, thank you for joining us as well. >>> coming up, the frantic rantings of the nra. citizen lapierre has gotten crazier. he says we need to buy guns, to arm up to protect ourselves from the marauding hispanic gangs. >>> remember the line, this one, from "brokeback mountain," i wish i knew how to quit you. well, republicans just can't quit their cartoon version of president

>>le, i'm sure chuck hagel thinks no good deed goes unpunished. i only met him once. he was kind enough to give me an interview. i think he regrets using that term, jewish lobby. i don't use it because it's inexact to degree and politics is about addition, not substraction and people stopped listening when you use those kinds of terms. but the reality is chuck hagel simply acknowledge something that few senators and representatives are prepared to acknowledge. that the pro-israeli community has a powerful voice in the united states. not a veto. he just ex prexed himself in a way that few senators and representatives do, and i admire that clarity and that honesty. i think he may not be a defense intellectual. he may not have the broad management experience of some of our previous secretaries of defense but he's not an ideologue. he will give the president sober advice about how, when, and why we should protect your military force abroad. >> and as a former enlisted man, he will be able to relate to the tens of thousands of young troops who are being demobilized over th
